PlatAfrica 2022 Competition :
Hosted annually by Anglo American Platinum, in partnership with Platinum Guild International India (PGI India) & Metal Concentrators, PlatAfrica is South Africa's premiere platinum jewellery design & manufacturing competition.
South Africa is the largest producer of platinum in the world. A flagship market development initiative, the competition was created to promote innovation and technical expertise in platinum jewellery & design within
the local jewellery industry. Underpinned by extensive research, a creative design brief is developed in collaboration with PGI India each year. Students, apprentices and professional jewellers are invited to submit statement
pieces to be judged by an esteemed panel of local and international jewellery experts on a holistic range of criteria including interpretation of the brief and technical expertise. The metal required to produce each handcrafted
piece is loaned to each participant - provided by Anglo American Platinum and distributed by Metal Concentrators. The winners receive a cash prize, national media exposure and the opportunity to participate in an all-expenses
paid design workshop at PGI India to learn more about the design and manufacturing of platinum jewellery in the world’s fastest growing market for this product. Candidates are also eligible to participate in the design
sourcing process for the prestigious PGI India brand, Evara.
Introducing PlatAfrica 2022 - #Hope
The theme of the 23rd edition of PlatAfrica is #Hope, is calling for designs that demonstrate trust in artisanry in an uncertain world. This year’s theme is inspired by the world’s Covid-19 experience and the embrace
of sustainability and meaningful luxury. Designers are required to interpret the #Hope theme through specific design hooks that speak to new perspectives, transitions and interconnectedness. Judges will be looking for creativity,
originality and interpretation of the Hope theme in delivery on design expectations, along with an assessment of technical excellence.
Competition details
Design and manufacture a single piece of jewellery that fits the #Hope theme.
The two categories of adjudication are individual students/apprentices and individual professionals.
Platinum must be core to the design; other materials maybe incorporated*
Creativity, originality, interpretation of the theme, delivery on the design expectations and technical excellence will be assessed.
